ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) is a national system that
- provides subject and author indexing to over 700 education journals, and
- collects, organizes and disseminates on microfiche other resources on a wide variety of topics in education.
More about the ERIC System, including links to the ERIC Clearinghouses.
Typical ERIC microfiche documents include papers read at conferences, research reports, and curriculum guides. The journal articles and books listed in ERIC are not included in the ERIC microfiche collection, but they may be available in the library on paper or microfilm.
Using the ERIC Thesaurus
The first step in an effective search is to determine which term(s) are used by ERIC to index your subject. Use the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (a printed copy is in Crumb Reference; and see links to online ERIC Thesauri in the table above) to draw up a list of subject headings (called "Descriptors" in ERIC.) Online versions of the Thesaurus are part of most ERIC search services, including ERIC via FirstSearch (see the "Subjects" button on their search page). Below is a sample entry from the print version of the Thesaurus. If you are using a version of ERIC without access to the Thesaurus, make note of the "Descriptors" listed on records you find particularly relevant, and use these to improve your search.
Example from the Thesaurus:
Diagnosis (Educational)
use EDUCATIONAL DIAGNOSIS
DIAGNOSTIC TEACHING Jul 1966
CIJE 303 RIE 636 GC 310
SN Process of diagnosing student abilities, needs, and objectives and prescribing requisite learning activities
UF Proscriptive Teaching
BT Teaching Methods
- RT Counselor Teacher Cooperation
- Diagnostic Tests
- Educational Diagnosis
- Educational Therapy
- Individualized Education Programs
- Individualized Instruction
- Informal Assessment
- Learning Problems
-
-
- SN=Scope Note; used to explain the term
- UF=Used For
- BT=Broader term
- RT=Related term
- NT=Narrower term
"CIJE:303" means this term has been used as a keyword (descriptor) for 303 articles indexed in CIJE since 1966
Similarly for "RIE:636"
The date following the term indicates when it was first used as a descriptor.
Locating the journal articles
To find a journal cited in ERIC, click the "ArticleLinker" button that appear with each article record. This will bring up a window that shows online availability of the article (if any), and a link to BearCat if we have any of the periodical in paper. Check the record in BearCat to see if we have the year of the periodical you need, and get its call# to find it on the shelves.
Or you can look up the journal title using "Periodical Title Search". From the results obtained here, you can clilck down to the article, if it is online.
Journals subscribed to in paper are arranged by call number. Unbound issues of journals are shelved in the periodicals area. Bound volumes are shelved with the library's books. Volumes on microfilm are in file cabinets in the periodicals area.
Locating the ERIC microfiche documents
Items with an ERIC No. beginning ED...(e.g.ED288305) are not journal articles, they are called "ERIC Documents." Most of these are available in the Crumb Library ERIC microfiche collection. For 1993 - date, they may also be available electronically through "ERIC Full-Text" - see below. A limited number of documents may be marked "Document not available...", and will NOT be in the microfiche collection or through ERIC Full-Text.
ERIC Documents in Full Text
ERIC Full-Text is a service which provides electronic access to about 80% of ERIC documents (those with ED#s), 1993 forward. The remainder are restricted by contributors to microfiche release, and available in Crumb Library on microfiche, or a small number which are not available at all through ERIC
